CAMRA asks pubgoers to help fight OFT
2010-01-30

The Campaign for Real Ale (CAMRA) is asking pubgoers for funds to fight an appeal against the Office of Fair Trading's (OFT) decision not to investigate the pub 'tie'. CAMRA had instigated a 'super complaint' which obliged the OFT to investigate the tie which it claimed had a detrimental impact on customers. CAMRA said the high prices tied pubs pay for their beers forced up prices to consumers, restricted choice and was in part responsible for some pub closures.

However the OFT's report concluded the tie was not anti-competitive or unfair to consumers. CAMRA was furious the OFT had dismissed all of its complaints and believes it did not carry out a proper investigation. It wants to make an appeal to the Competition Appeals Tribunal which will cost ‘tens of thousands of pounds'.
